| Clippers Edge Past Eagles, 5-4 | The Baltimore Clippers beat the Washington Eagles, 5-4, at Columbia Stadium. Hank Wallace, who is tied for 8th in the FA with a .319 batting average, starred for Baltimore. He went 4 for 4 with 4 singles and a walk. Picking up the win was Johnny Hugot. He went 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 10 hits. The left--hander struck out 5 and walked 1. Picking up the save was Davey Cronin, his 17th.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the sixth, with the game tied, Amos Johnson was at the plate when Baltimore scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Clippers to go in front, 3-2.
"Winning is the only thing that really matters," Wallace told the Baltimore Observer. "If you can win without even breaking a sweat, more power to you."
Baltimore is second in the Federal Association East with a record of 47-54. | |
