| Minutemen Fall Short, 7-6, at New York | New York second baseman Joe Jones picked up 3 ribbies while helping his team beat back the Boston Minutemen, 7-6. Bunny Mullins, who finished 5th in the FA in strikeouts with 184 in 1972, was the winning pitcher. Over 8.1 innings, he allowed 6 runs on 8 hits, with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. The save was credited to George Libby, his 11th.
With New York leading 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Jones hit a run-scoring single off Boston hurler John Lewis. It was the 59th hit of the season for Jones and put his team ahead, 7-2.
"Just trying to keep things simple and helping the team win any way I can," Jones told a local reporter after the game.
The Gothams, at 48-55, inhabit third place in the Federal Association East. | |
