| Cougars Handed 2-1 Loss by Montreal | The Montreal Saints earned a close win over the Chicago Cougars, thanks in part to Tommy Jackson. The Montreal right-hander, who won the Allen Award in 1972, played a key role in the 2-1 victory. Jackson yielded 1 run over 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. His record improves to 9-8. Bill Richards earned the save for Montreal, his 4th of the year.
A crucial at-bat came with the bases empty and no one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when right fielder Jim Hendricks, who finished 5th in the CA in extra base hits with 59 in 1972, hit a triple. The Saints went on to win.
In postgame remarks, Hendricks applauded his team's "toughness."
By defeating Chicago, the 4th-place Saints improved to 50-49. | |
