He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 5 and giving up 1 walk. The Copperheads, at 62-36, sit in first place in the Federal Association East.

The Copperheads got a big hit from catcher Howard Smith. Facing Chicago pitcher Frank Carmichael in the bottom of the sixth, Smith pounded a 2-run double to left-center. His 16th double of the season put the Copperheads ahead, 3-0.

Smith called the win a test of his team's "mettle."
