| Sailors Topple Wolves with Late Rally | Toronto got a terrific performance from pitcher Stan Terry, but it wasn't enough to beat the San Francisco Sailors. San Francisco won the Golden Gate Stadium contest, 5-3. Terry threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. San Francisco reliever Ralph Pierce snagged the win, upping his record to 2-5. Ray Smith shouldered the loss. San Francisco goes to 47-51, Toronto to 39-56.
The Sailors beat the Wolves in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Art Gates produced in the bottom of the eighth. Batting against Ray Smith, Gates gave his team the lead, 5-3, when he hit a 2-run single.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Gates told the San Francisco Gazette. | |
