| Imperials Rally to Win | Both teams had their chances, but the New York Imperials eventually prevailed.
The New York Imperials defeated the Chicago Cougars by the score of 4-3, with the biggest share of the credit going to left fielder Bill Wood. Wood was 3-4 with 3 singles, while scoring 2 for the Imperials on the day. Ed Cooper, 6-5, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings.
George Love drove in one run for New York. With one out and the game tied in the bottom of the eighth inning, Love, who led the CA in extra base hits with 76 in 1969, had a clutch at-bat. Facing Chicago hurler Jim Norris, he hit a sacrifice fly to give the Imperials a 4-3 lead.
"Good win," said Love. "Maybe some of the whiners in the clubhouse will pipe down for a little while now."
The first-place Imperials go to 47-37. | |
