| Blues Take Tight Tangle | Both teams had their chances, but the Chicago Blues eventually prevailed.
The Blues grabbed a win, 5-4, at Cocker Park, overcoming a fine effort from Pittsburgh pitcher Leroy Budimir. Budimir went 7.2 innings and allowed 4 runs. Russ Hoover got the win, improving to 6-7. He worked 9 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 8.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Bob Wojtkiewicz came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Pittsburgh pitcher Randy Boroughs, he hit a full count fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 5-4.
"I don't feel you win baseball games by working harder than the other team or 'wanting it more,'" Wojtkiewicz told the Chicago Citizen. "You win just by scoring more runs."
