Kansas City starter Orville Johnson put the New York offense in a vise grip. The right-hander relied heavily on his screwball in leading the Mavericks to a 2-1 win. The winning pitcher was Johnson, now 3-3. He tossed 7 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 4 and fanning 4. Johnny Manning picked up the save, his 2nd.

Left Fielder Tony Keil made an impact for Kansas City, when he swatted a run-scoring double off Jim White in the bottom of the fourth. For the contest, Keil was 1-4 with a double.

"I pretty much put my pitches where I wanted to," said Johnson.

With the win, Kansas City improves its record to 9-20.
