Dynamos Lose to Eagles, 4-2 | The Washington Eagles defeated the Detroit Dynamos, 4-2, in Federal Association action at Columbia Stadium. Washington pitcher Jim Stewart had a standout performance. In 9 innings, Stewart surrendered 8 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 0. He allowed 2 runs. By defeating Detroit, the 5th-place Eagles improved to 32-34.
Howdy Oakes had a big 2-run double for the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Washington leading 2-1 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a curveball from Larry Beebe, who finished 5th in the CA in wins with 17 in 1954, and swatted a double to left. It was his 10th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Eagles ahead, 4-1.
"Jim was hitting his spots and everything had life," said Washington manager Roger Cleaves. | |
