Pioneers Foil Eagles, 2-1
The St. Louis Pioneers defeated the Washington Eagles, 2-1, in Federal League action at Pioneer Field. St. Louis pitcher Joe Taylor had a standout performance. Taylor yielded 1 run over 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. His record improves to 7-5. Mike Nipp notched his 20th save in 23 chances.

Dick Josephs had a big run-scoring double for the Pioneers in the bottom of the first inning. With St. Louis leading 1-0 and a runner on 3rd, he got a fastball from Gary Nadreau, who finished 5th in the FL in wins with 22 last year, and swatted a double to right. It was his 14th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Pioneers ahead, 2-0.

"If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said St. Louis manager Joe Whitcomb.

St. Louis is now 54-66, Washington 48-67.
