The Atlanta Copperheads turned back the Chicago Chiefs, 5-4, at Whitney Park. Earl Skains, in particular, had a fine performance. He went 2-4 with 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Atlanta reliever Ike Abraham was the winner. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Joe Jones. Picking up the save was 22-year old right-handed pitcher Bill Hunn.

Atlanta used a timely hit from Jay Hunter to get the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Copperheads ahead, 5-4. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a difference-maker.

"We found a way to get it done," Hunter said.

Now 10-16, the Chiefs have not played well this season.
