| Mechanics Net 6-1 Win Over Blues | Charlie Phipps, who finished 4th in the UL in ERA with 2.16 last year, never let the Blues get in a groove. The left-hander used his bread and butter, his splitter, to pitch the Mechanics to a win, 6-1. The winning pitcher was Phipps, now 8-7. He tossed 7.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 4 and fanning 3. Pittsburgh goes to 56-54, Chicago to 55-59.
Rogelio Gomez had a big 2-run triple for the Mechanics in the top of the first inning. With Pittsburgh leading 2-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a fastball from Larry Wurth, who is tied for 4th in the UL with a 1.99 ERA, and swatted a triple to right. It was his 8th triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mechanics ahead, 4-0.
In postgame comments to the Pittsburgh News, Gomez said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
