The St. Louis Pioneers were almost helpless in their 4-0 loss to the Philadelphia Keystones and hurler Doc Carver. Carver kept the Pioneers confused all game, spinning a 6-hit shutout.

"Tip your hat to Carver," St. Louis manager Babe Johnson said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."

The 38-year-old left-hander had 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in a strong performance.

"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Carver said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."

To date, Carver has a 1-3 mark in 6 starts with a 2.98 ERA. He has given up 52 hits in 45.1 innings, struck out 16 and issued 13 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .291 batting average against him.
