| Pioneers Send Brooklyn Home with 4-1 Loss | The St. Louis Pioneers went home winners at Pioneer Field, thanks in large part to starter Tom Spongberg. Spongberg stifled the Brooklyn Kings, enabling St. Louis to grab the 4-1 win. Spongberg got the win, improving to 7-16. He gave up 9 hits and walked 0 over 9 innings. He allowed 1 run. St. Louis is now 41-51, Brooklyn 40-48.
The Pioneers got a big at-bat from third baseman Dick Josephs. For the game, Josephs was 1 for 2 with a triple. He drove in 2 runs. In the bottom of the third, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run triple. His 10th triple of the season gave St. Louis a 2-0 lead.
"I thought Tom threw the ball well across the board," said St. Louis manager Joe Whitcomb.
