| Grays Drop Lancers, 3-2 | The Detroit Lancers could not turn a fine performance from pitcher John Humphreys into a win. Instead, the Cleveland Grays prevailed, 3-2. Humphreys threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The Lancers drop to 11-16, as their stumbling start to the 1917 season continues.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for George O'Brien? The 32-year old third baseman O'Brien stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put Cleveland up, 3-2. For the game, he was 2 for 3, including 1 double and 1 single.
"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Detroit manager Frank McGrath.
