The New York Stars picked up a win at Riverside Stadium II, topping the Pittsburgh Mechanics, 1-0. On the mound for New York was right-hander Ray Cox. He played a principal role in the triumph. The 44-36 Stars have won 12 games in a row.

New York second baseman Jack McDermott contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the fourth. With two down, he hit a fastball to right-center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 74th hit of the season and put the Stars ahead, 1-0.

"That's baseball," said Pittsburgh manager Jim Clement. "Sometimes the other team plays better than yours."
