| Pioneers Earn Late Win | The St. Louis Pioneers got a stellar performance from pitcher Billy Hasson, who handcuffed the Philadelphia offense en route to a win, 2-1, at Broad Street Park II. John Gibson was called on to finish, recording his 5th save. The Pioneers, now 14-4, have been sizzling early on.
St. Louis used the timely hitting of Jerry Smith to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Pioneers on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We didn't string enough hits together to win the game," said tight-lipped Philadelphia manager Don Fox. "Obviously."
