| Chicago Downed, 5-3, by Millers | Chicago got a terrific performance from pitcher Otis Hawkins, but it wasn't enough to beat the Minneapolis Millers. Minneapolis won the Whitney Park contest, 5-3. Hawkins threw 7.0 innings of 6-hit ball for the losing team. The win went to Wayne Stevens in relief, making him now 2-1. Hal Alsip took the loss for Chicago. After losing, Chicago is 11-9.
Minneapolis used the timely hitting of Julio Castaneda to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Millers on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
Castaneda told the Minneapolis Citizen: "I think I thrive on conflict. It brings out my best."
