| Mavericks Claim 5-1 Triumph | Getting an impressive start from Cal Newman, Kansas City beat San Francisco by the score of 5-1. The last-place Mavericks hiked their record to 31-45.
Kansas City used the timely hitting of Mel Wingerter to seize the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Mavericks on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"You want to go out there and put up zeroes, that's the main thing," said Newman. "You don't want to get caught in one of those back-and-forth, run-for-run games."
