| Gothams Snatch Late Win | New York and Detroit got after it at Thompson Field.
Despite a fine performance by catcher Lew Mercer, the Detroit Dynamos lost to the New York Gothams, 8-5, in 10 innings. Mercer was 2 for 2 with a home run and 2 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Bill Howard nailed down his 2nd save.
New York used the timely hitting of Tom Jovin to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Gothams on top, 6-5. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"They tested our mettle," said Jovin. "But that's good. It toughens us up."
New York, now 46-65, holds down 7th place in the Federal Association.
