| Detroit Downed, 4-3, by Stars | The New York Stars racked up a win at Thompson Field, bumping off the Detroit Lancers, 4-3. Joe Perez, who started for New York, pitched effectively for his team. The Lancers drop to 9-12 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1917 season.
New York used the timely hitting of Russ Gustafson to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Stars on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said New York manager Eli Moses. "It's usually not just one thing."
