| Pioneers Suffer One-Run Loss at Chicago | Starting pitcher Johnny Maples pitched well enough to help the Chicago Chiefs beat the St. Louis Pioneers, 4-3. The winning pitcher was Maples, now 3-0. He tossed 7.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 8. Now 4-11, the Pioneers have gotten off to a poor start.
The Chiefs got a big at-bat from first baseman Allan Griffen. For the game, Griffen was 1 for 2 with a home run and 2 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the second, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Chicago a 3-1 lead.
