| Eagles Take Tight Tangle | Washington and Chicago got after it at Columbia Stadium.
The Chicago Chiefs got a superb performance from pitcher Larry Barker, but the Washington Eagles still won the game, 6-5. Barker threw 6.0 innings of 5-hit ball. Washington pitcher Vance Smith got the win, upping his record to 1-1. Hal Alsip got the loss.
Had Ed MacNaughton not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, MacNaughton hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Eagles.
"In this profession, you've got to put the good and the bad behind you quickly," Chicago skipper Ollie Howard said.
At 29-31, Washington is in 5th place in the Federal Association East. | |
