| Gothams Prevail, 3-1, Over Boston | Jake Watkins, who finished 2nd in the FA in ERA with 2.62 in 1972, was terrific for the New York Gothams in his team's 3-1 triumph over the Boston Minutemen. His performance earned Watkins rave reviews. Watkins, the winner, moves to 1-0. He threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 5 and giving up 2 walks. The save went to Jeff Pettigrew, his 1st this season.
Dutch Eckelberry chipped in a 2-run home run for New York in the bottom of the first. For the game, the second baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.
"We're not exactly playing great right now," said Dode Edwards, the Boston manager.
