| Monarchs Drop Pioneers, 3-2 | Jeff Kelley could take little solace in pitching a good game. The fact is his St. Louis Pioneers lost, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Cincinnati Monarchs at Vine Street Base Ball Grounds. Cincinnati reliever Gary Gordon picked up the win, upping his record to 2-1. Jeff Kelley was saddled with the loss. The Pioneers fall to 8-10 and continue their uneven start to the 1917 season.
Randolph Cook drove in one run for Cincinnati. The 26-year old catcher had a key at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring ground out off Jeff Kelley. It was his 1st RBI of the season.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Cincinnati manager Jack Schmidt said.
