| Sailors Fall Short, 5-4, at Chicago | The Chicago Cougars had to overcome a big game from San Francisco first baseman Woody Richardson to leave Cougars Park with a victory. And they did, winning, 5-4. Richardson went 2 for 2 with 2 singles and 2 walks. Pug White got the win, improving to 2-1. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 10 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 4. Jim Norris, who finished 2nd in the FA in innings pitched with 278.2 in 1955, earned the save for Chicago.
Had Cleo Harris not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Harris hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Cougars.
"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Harris said.
San Francisco falls to 7-5. | |
