Houston got a valiant performance from pitcher Johnny Blackburn, but it wasn't enough to beat the St. Louis Pioneers. St. Louis won the game, 4-2. Blackburn threw 7.2 innings of 6-hit ball for the losing team. St. Louis reliever Manuel Hernandez picked up the win to move to 1-1. Johnny Blackburn suffered the loss. St. Louis goes to 5-6.

Had John Guay not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Guay hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Pioneers.

"Nice to tuck this win away," said Guay.
