| Copperheads Earn Late Win | The Atlanta Copperheads beat the St. Louis Pioneers by a score of 4-3. Atlanta catcher Howard Smith deserved the lion's share of the credit. Smith was 1 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Copperheads. Atlanta reliever Bill Hunn picked up the win, upping his record to 6-2. Jesse Polis absorbed the loss. Atlanta raised its record to 34-17 with the win.
John Newton was the walk-off hero for Atlanta. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Copperheads shortstop hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"This wasn't a good win," said Smith. "It was a great win."
