Bruce, Cannons Too Much for Stars
In a high-scoring contest between Cincinnati and Los Angeles, catcher Pete Bruce was a difference-maker. Bruce, who finished 3rd in the CA in on-base percentage with .395 last year, distinguished himself in the 11-8 Cincinnati win. He went 3 for 3 with a double, 2 singles, and 2 walks. He scored 4 times. Ace Barrell was the winner. Over 6 innings, he yielded 5 runs on 6 hits, with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Dutch Lane earned save number 6 this season.

Bud Cormier had a big bases-clearing double for the Cannons in the bottom of the third inning. With Cincinnati trailing 3-1 and the bases loaded, he got a curveball from Jackie Thompson, who finished 2nd in the CA in saves with 19 in 1973, and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 8th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cannons ahead, 4-3.

"Pete leaves the last at-bat behind him, whether it was good or bad, and goes up there and competes on every pitch," said Cincinnati manager Charlie Britton.

By defeating Los Angeles, the 5th-place Cannons improved to 21-27.
