Philadelphia got a decent performance from pitcher Buzz Lucas, but it wasn't enough to beat the New York Gothams. New York won the Broad Street Park II contest, 4-1. Lucas threw 9.0 innings of 3-hit ball for the losing team. Jake Watkins, the winner, is now 2-1. He struck out 3 and walked 7 over 5.1 innings, while allowing 1 run on 2 hits. Jeff Pettigrew earned the save for New York, his 5th.

New York used a clutch at-bat from Ed Davis to capture the win. The left fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Gothams ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"It all depends on which version of our team shows up," said Davis. "When we put it all together, I think we're a great team."

The 4th-place Gothams improved to 18-20.
