| Brooks Hurls Philadelphia to Shutout Win Friday, October 1st , 1943 There was no spell, no black magic -- just good pitching.
George M Brooks of the Philadelphia Keystones blanked the St. Louis Pioneers, 1-0, at Broad Street Park II today, and he did it the old-fashioned way. After finishing the 2-hit, complete-game shutout, he was all smiles.
"I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game," Brooks said. "I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."
Brooks walked 0 and struck out 1 in the victory.
"He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes," Pioneers manager Hugh Luckey said later.
For this year Brooks has chalked up 15 wins and 12 losses in 34 starts with 141 strikeouts in 263 innings and a 3.32 ERA.
