| Smith Twirls 1-0 Shutout | Larry Smith hurled a fine game for the Matanzas Buccaneers at Santa Clara Stadium today, holding the Santa Clara Stallions to 4 hits in a shutout win.
"When he started out, his command wasn't that good, but he's a tough guy," Matanzas manager Tommy McConnaughey said. "The more pitches he throws, the better his command is."
The right-hander had 5 strikeouts and 3 walks in the 1-0 victory.
"An outstanding job," Santa Clara manager Fred Spears said. "We couldn't get anything going. Every time we got a hit, he got out of the jam. He pitched a terrific game."
To date this year, he has registered no saves, 3 wins and 5 losses with a 3.01 ERA. Smith has made no relief appearances, worked a total of 71.2 innings and surrendered 55 hits. He has fanned 61, issued 37 free passes and held opposing clubs to a .210 batting average. | |
