Baltimore beat Philadelphia on the strength of starter Ken Carpenter's fine effort. The left-hander led his team to a 3-2 win. Baltimore is now 71-80.

Paul Spiers drove in one run for Baltimore. The 25-year old second baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Rollie Beal. It was his 9th RBI of the season.

"I'll probably toss and turn tonight," Philadelphia manager Jim Cathey said following the tough loss.
