Chiefs Best Miners in Pitching Duel | Chicago starter Red Hampton put a stranglehold on the Pittsburgh offense. The left-hander had complete command of his fastball in leading the Chiefs to a 2-1 win. Hampton, now 6-5, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 2, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. Chicago now owns a record of 31-32.
Jim Mayfield had a timely hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two out and runners on 1st and 2nd, the Chicago left fielder hit a run-scoring single. That put the Chiefs in front, 2-1.
"I tried to mix it up, keep them off balance," said Hampton. | |
