Victory Over Pioneers Takes Chicago to 11-7 | Chicago catcher Al Padgett played a vital role in his team's 5-2 conquest of St. Louis. He went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for Chicago. Picking up the win was Dick Champ. He went 7.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits. The right--hander struck out 3 and walked 0. Losses have been rare for the Pioneers, who are now 13-5.
With Chicago leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Padgett hit a 2-run single off St. Louis hurler Steve Madden. It was the 9th hit of the season for Padgett and put his team ahead, 5-2.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Chicago manager Dutch Becker. "It's usually not just one thing." | |
