| Gothams Beat Chiefs, 5-3 | Hal Hackney, who finished 3rd in the FA in innings pitched with 266.2 in 1947, propelled his team to victory over the Chicago Chiefs. The final score was 5-3, New York. The win puts New York at 18-14 this season.
Cecil LaBonte had a big 2-run double for the Gothams in the top of the first inning. With New York leading 3-0 and runners on 1st and 3rd, he got a fastball from Angel Lopez, who finished 3rd in the FA in wins with 17 in 1953, and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 7th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Gothams ahead, 5-0.
New York manager Ad Doria was pleased with the team's effort. "It was just a good, gutsy performance by everybody," he said.
