Chicago Drops Philadelphia, 7-3 | The 1961 season did not get off to quite the start the Philadelphia Keystones had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Chicago Chiefs at Broad Street Park II. The final score was 7-3. Starting Pitcher Vern Osborne was the top performer for Chicago.
Rod Shearer had a big 2-run double for the Chiefs in the top of the sixth inning. With Chicago leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a sinker from 26-year old right-handed pitcher William Davis and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 2nd double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Chiefs ahead, 3-0.
"Vern really held it together well," said Chicago manager Dutch Becker. | |
