The standout performance belonged to Washington pitcher and Boston, Massachusetts, native Bob Haverhill. Jim Heitzman earned his 5th save, after closing out the game. Jesse Alvardo dealt the Chiefs a blow in the top of the fifth. Batting with runners on 2nd and 3rd and Washington leading 3-1, Alvardo, who finished 2nd in the FA in extra base hits with 67 in 1951, hit a 0-1 slider for a run-scoring single.
